Nervi
Nervi is one of the historic estates in Gattinara, in Upper Piedmont, where Nebbiolo is traditionally known as Spanna and finds one of its most distinctive expressions. The producer operates within the Gattinara DOCG, a Piedmontese appellation in the province of Vercelli, at the foot of Monte Rosa, characterised by volcanic hills and a cool climate, which favours slow ripening and natural acidity.
Nervi’s identity is directly linked to the vineyards of Gattinara, with historic plots such as Molsino and Valferana that reflect the terroir’s character. The soils, rich in porphyry, minerals, clay and fine sand, help to give the wines a crisp, austere and elegant profile, distinct from the better-known expressions of Nebbiolo from the Langhe. The altitude, the hillside exposures and the Alpine influence combine to define wines of vertical energy, with a precise tannic structure, freshness and aromatic depth.
The winemaking philosophy prioritises an understanding of the terroir: the raw material takes centre stage, with winemaking techniques designed to highlight the grape variety’s character and ageing processes consistent with the Gattinara tradition. The result is wines with a distinctive character, capable of combining rigour, floral finesse, mineral notes and a structure destined to evolve with balance. Nervi thus represents an important voice within the Nebbiolo of Upper Piedmont and its most authentic wine-growing culture.
