Nicola Bergaglio
Nicola Bergaglio is a Piedmontese winemaker with deep roots in the Gavi area, in the province of Alessandria, where the Cortese grape variety finds one of its most distinctive expressions. The winery was founded around fifty years ago and has built its identity on a very clear production philosophy: to focus on Gavi DOCG and Cortese, interpreting the appellation through white wines that reflect the terroir – dry, fresh and straightforward.
The setting is the Gavi hills, a cultural and climatic borderland between Piedmont and Liguria, characterised by breezy conditions, significant temperature variations and soils capable of fostering aromatic finesse and a sense of tension on the palate. The grapes come from vineyards in the Gavi and Rovereto di Gavi areas, with favourable exposures and soils described as predominantly clayey; in some plots, there is a component of red clay rich in iron, an element that contributes to the structure and mineral character of the wines.
The winemaking approach prioritises precision over the raw material and focuses on preserving the wine’s integrity, freshness and varietal character. Hand-harvesting, soft pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel result in a clean, crisp style that is true to the Cortese grape’s character. Nicola Bergaglio’s wines are characterised by citrus and floral notes, lively acidity, savoury nuances and a refined finish, showcasing the most classic and terroir-driven aspects of Piedmontese Gavi.
