Nino Negri
Nino Negri is one of Valtellina’s leading wineries, based in Chiuro, in the heart of the Alpine Lombardy region, with a history dating back to 1897. Its identity stems from an extreme wine-growing landscape: an amphitheatre of terraced slopes, rocks and dry stone walls, where the vines grow on the slopes of the Rhaetian Alps, sheltered from the cold northern winds and benefiting from sunny exposures and marked daily temperature variations. In this setting, Nebbiolo – known locally as Chiavennasca – takes on a mountainous character, refined and taut, capable of expressing the nuances of a highly fragmented terroir.
Nino Negri’s work focuses on the historic wine-growing areas of Valtellina, including Grumello, Inferno, Fracia, Sassella and Valgella, making the most of differences in soil, slope, aspect and microclimate. The poor soils, which are often shallow and underlain by metamorphic rock, encourage deep root systems and contribute to wines with an elegant structure, lively acidity, distinct tannins and a recognisable mineral character.
The production philosophy combines continuity with innovation: the tradition of mountain viticulture is interpreted through careful grape selection, precise winemaking techniques and an understanding of each individual plot. The result is a consistent style, in which Chiavennasca expresses energy, structure and aromatic complexity, whilst maintaining a clear connection with the Valtellina terraces and the agricultural heritage that sustains them.
