Palari
Palari is closely linked to the hills of Santo Stefano di Briga, in the Messina area, where north-eastern Sicily overlooks the Strait and maintains a winemaking tradition with a strong sense of identity. The key reference point is Faro DOC, the historic appellation of the municipality of Messina, built upon a balance of indigenous red grape varieties and a landscape of slopes, terraces and proximity to the sea, which defines its character. In Contrada Palari, the vineyards—trained using the alberello method and situated on steep south- and south-east-facing slopes—benefit from a distinctive microclimate: the altitude, the close proximity to the sea and the breezes from the Strait promote gradual ripening, preserving the tension and finesse of the grapes.
The winery’s identity is rooted in local grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera, Core ’e Palumba, Acitana, Galatena and Jacché – varieties that reflect the ampelographic complexity of the Messina region. Vineyard management, which is necessarily carried out by hand due to the nature of the soil and the terraced layout, prioritises a direct relationship with the vines and the landscape. In the winery, the approach combines traditional care with technical control: gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation, ageing in French oak and finishing without fining or filtration all contribute to wines with a deep, spicy and maritime profile. Palari thus offers a distinctive interpretation of Faro, in which structure, elegance and a sense of place go hand in hand.
