Palazzone
Palazzone is nestled amongst the hills of Rocca Ripesena, a stone’s throw from Orvieto, in an Umbrian landscape characterised by tuff cliffs and soils of sedimentary origin. The estate, referred to in local tradition as an ancient resting place, has been developed for wine-growing since the late 1960s, with an approach centred on Orvieto’s historic viticultural heritage and a patient understanding of the vineyards. The vineyards are situated on the hillsides between Rocca Ripesena and Romitorio, with varying exposures and soils composed of clay, silt, sand and strata reminiscent of seabeds and ancient watercourses. In this context, Palazzone focuses primarily on Orvieto’s traditional grape varieties, with Grechetto and Procanico at the heart of its range, complemented by Verdello and Malvasia to round out the profile of the local white wines. The production philosophy prioritises work in the vineyard, consistency in agronomic choices and a winemaking process designed to express complexity, character and the potential for ageing. The style seeks to produce a crisp and incisive white wine from central Italy, Mediterranean in character yet underpinned by freshness, mineral structure and unhurried maturation. Alongside the classic interpretation of Orvieto, the region also produces sweet wines derived from late harvests and noble rot, in keeping with an ancient and distinctive local tradition.
