Paolo Calì
Paolo Calì is a Sicilian winemaker based in Vittoria, in the Ragusa area, within the Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico appellation. His identity stems from a highly distinctive wine-growing landscape: vineyards with roots in marine sands, shaped by the wind and sun, in a setting close to the sea and characterised by significant daily temperature variations that enhance the wines’ aromas, freshness and expressive character. This relationship with the sand is the estate’s most distinctive feature and shapes a clear sense of place, linked to south-eastern Sicily and its tradition of indigenous grape varieties.
The vineyard focuses on Sicilian varieties such as Frappato, Nero d’Avola and Grillo, cultivated with a focus on the health of the vines and the balance of the raw material. In the winery, the approach is minimalist: fermentation is initiated using indigenous yeasts, with minimal intervention and a focus on achieving harmony between soil, climate and wine. The result is a style that emphasises the authenticity of the terroir rather than technical artistry, with reds in which the interplay between Frappato and Nero d’Avola captures the very essence of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG appellation.
Paolo Calì’s wines express a luminous, sandy Sicily, characterised by aromatic finesse, a briny edge and balance. Their distinctive character stems from a commitment to the natural conditions of Vittoria and a free-spirited approach to winemaking, centred on varietal identity and territorial precision.
