Paternoster
Paternoster is a historic winery in Basilicata, based in Barile, in the heart of the Vulture region, where Aglianico finds one of its most distinctive expressions. In operation since 1925, it links its identity to the Aglianico del Vulture appellation and to an interpretation of the terroir based on an understanding of individual plots, rather than on a uniform style. The landscape is dominated by Mount Vulture, an extinct volcano that has left behind dark soils of pyroclastic origin – porous and rich in minerals – capable of retaining water and releasing it gradually during the driest months. The vineyards are situated in the historic districts of Barile, including Rotondo, Macarico, Pian di Carro and Gelosia, in a hilly landscape characterised by significant altitudes, cool nights and marked daily temperature variations. These conditions favour slow ripening and contribute to the depth, structure and natural longevity of the Aglianico. The winemaking approach prioritises respect for the raw material: each plot is vinified separately, so as to preserve its identity, character and nuances. The result is a precise and consistent expression of the Vulture terroir, where the volcanic character translates into wines with an intense, mineral and robust profile, capable of combining energy, austerity and a distinct sense of place.
