Perillo
Perillo is a Campania-based producer based in Castelfranci, in the heart of the Avellino region of Irpinia and the Taurasi DOCG area. Its identity stems from a long-standing tradition with Aglianico, grown in vineyards situated between Castelfranci and Montemarano, two towns in the Calore Valley that lie in the innermost and highest-altitude part of the appellation. Here, the grape variety ripens slowly, influenced by significant daily temperature variations, hillside exposures and Irpinian soils in which limestone, sandy and volcanic components help to define the wine’s structure, depth and mineral tension.
A distinctive feature of this producer is the presence of old vines, including ungrafted ones, which produce an Aglianico with sparse clusters and small berries, locally known for their elongated shape, referred to as a ‘ponytail’. The decision to bottle under their own name from the late 1990s onwards has ensured continuity in an approach centred on the recognisability of the raw material and loyalty to the terroir.
Perillo’s style favours wines with a simple yet profound profile, in which the natural power of Aglianico is not tamed but rather guided by a slow pace, prolonged ageing and a restrained approach to production. The result is a range of red wines with a distinct Irpinia character: austere in their youth, rich in tannic structure, freshness and savouriness, consistently reflecting the mountainous and introverted character of the Taurasi from Castelfranci and Montemarano.
