Polvanera
Polvanera is an Apulian winery with deep roots in the Gioia del Colle area, situated between Acquaviva delle Fonti and the Murgia landscape in the province of Bari. Its identity stems from Primitivo, a grape variety capable of expressing not only Mediterranean intensity but also freshness, minerality and aromatic finesse when grown on the inland hills of Puglia. The landscape, characterised by dry stone walls, downy oaks and vineyards, rests on a limestone subsoil comprising dark earth, marly clay, sand and tuff: a setting that contributes to the wines’ distinctive character and their salty, vertical profile.
The winemaking approach prioritises the promotion of indigenous grape varieties and a minimalist interpretation of the raw material. Alongside Primitivo, the range includes varieties from Apulia’s viticultural heritage such as Aleatico, Aglianico, Minutolo, Marchione and Bianco d’Alessano, all grown under certified organic farming practices. The temperature variations at the Murgia’s higher altitudes encourage crisp aromas and balanced ripening, whilst vineyard management maintains a direct link with traditional ‘alberello’ training methods and more contemporary systems.
In the winery, the stylistic approach is geared towards purity: maturation and ageing take place mainly in stainless steel and in the bottle, with the aim of ensuring that the varietal characteristics are not masked by the wood. The result is a consistent, terroir-driven and recognisable profile, in which the Primitivo di Gioia del Colle takes on a full yet agile character, rich in fruit, freshness and mineral tension.
