Villa Papiano
Villa Papiano is a wine producer based in Modigliana, in the Romagna Apennines, in a border area between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany where vineyards coexist with woodland, high altitude and a strong sense of natural identity. Its character is shaped by the southern slope of Monte Chioda and the Ibola valley, close to the Casentinesi Forests National Park, in a landscape characterised by marl and sandstone formations: marl, sandstone and poor soils that lend the grapes tension, depth and a savoury character.
Villa Papiano’s viticulture is Apennine in the truest sense of the word: vineyards surrounded by woodland, a cool, temperate climate, bright light and ripening that seeks a balance between aromatic finesse and subtle structure. Here, Sangiovese takes on a character typical of the Modigliana della Romagna DOC sub-zone, with expressions that are more elegant than robust, whilst other grape varieties grown on the estate – including Trebbiano, Sauvignon Blanc and Centesimino – all contribute to conveying the agricultural complexity of the area.
The winery’s approach prioritises artisanal vineyard management and a close relationship with the environment: organic farming practised for many years, organic certification and a documented transition to biodynamic methods. In the winery, the identity sought is not one of opulence, but of wines that are complex, long-lived and recognisable for their notes of light, flowers, undergrowth and salinity, with a structure that highlights their Apennine origins and the biodiversity of the Modigliana landscape.
