Fumin is a native black grape variety from the Aosta Valley, with an ancient history deeply rooted in mountain viticulture. The first reference to a vineyard appears in a manuscript from 1711, whilst the name seems to derive from the dialect term ‘Fumen’, referring to the ashy appearance of the berries, which are covered in a thick layer of bloom. The leaf is medium-sized, pentagonal and generally three-lobed, with a deep green margin and a slightly pitted surface. The bunch, of medium-short length, is cylindrical or conical, often featuring one or two wings and is moderately compact; the berry is small to medium in size, spheroidal, with a firm, blue-black skin and very heavy bloom.
It is found mainly in the middle valley, along the Dora Baltea river, particularly in the areas between Villeneuve and Pontey, where the variety best expresses its hardiness, vigour and adaptability to Alpine climatic conditions. Traditionally used in local blends, it is now also valued for single-varietal winemaking. The wine has an intense purple-red colour, sometimes with violet hues, and aromas of small red and black berries, pepper and balsamic notes. On the palate, it offers substantial structure, lively acidity and pronounced tannins, in a balance that is set to develop with ageing and support good longevity in the bottle.
