Galatena is a rare Sicilian red grape variety, linked to the winemaking tradition of the hills around Messina and, in particular, to the Strait area, where it contributes to the rich variety of grape varieties found in the historic vineyards of Faro. Its revival forms part of the resurgence of local viticulture that began in the 1980s and 1990s, when the ancient indigenous grape varieties found in the alberello-trained vineyards were brought to the fore. Galatena is grown mainly in the vineyards of Santo Stefano Briga and in the hilly districts near Faro, often interplanted with Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera. The available ampelographic documentation identifies it as a distinct traditional variety, but does not provide a complete and unambiguous morphological description of the bunch, berry and leaf; it is, however, a red grape variety intended primarily for use in blended wines. In wine, it contributes intense ruby hues – sometimes developing into garnet highlights – and a complex aromatic profile of ripe red fruits, flowers, spices and balsamic nuances. In blends, it lends structure, depth and tannic complexity, promoting gradual development in the bottle. Its oenological appeal lies precisely in its rarity and its defining role within the Faro and Rosso del Soprano wines, regional expressions that successfully combine elegance, intensity and longevity.
