Gewürztraminer belongs to the ancient Traminer family, a grape variety historically linked to Termeno in South Tyrol, although its origin is the subject of various interpretations. It is considered a particularly aromatic selection of Traminer rosa, now also identified as Savagnin rosa. The leaf is small, rounded or pentagonal, generally three-lobed, with veins that may take on reddish hues; the bunch is small, conical and sometimes winged, whilst the berries are spherical, small in size, with a thick, pruinose skin, a characteristic pinkish or coppery colour, and fragrant flesh. In Italy, it is most recognisable in South Tyrol, particularly in the hilly and mountainous areas of the province of Bolzano, but it is also widespread in Trentino and in some parts of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It is also a key variety in Alsace, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with significant plantings in Australia and California as well. The wine is distinguished by its intense straw-yellow colour, often with golden highlights, and by a broad, floral and spicy aromatic profile, with hints of rose, lychee, exotic fruit, ripe citrus, honey and sweet spices. On the palate, it is smooth, rich, well-structured and persistent, underpinned by a subtle freshness. The more concentrated versions, including sweet late-harvest wines, have great ageing potential. The name means ‘spicy Traminer’ and reflects the variety’s intense aromatic character.
