Ginestra is a white grape variety native to Campania, documented in the region since at least 1825, when it was mentioned as one of the most widespread varieties in the Naples area. Today it is primarily associated with the Amalfi Coast and the Lattari Mountains, where it is found in the municipalities of Scala, Ravello, Amalfi, Maiori, Minori, Furore, Tramonti, Corbara and Positano, and is also known locally as Biancazita or Biancatenera. The leaf is medium to large, wedge-shaped or pentagonal, generally three-lobed. The bunch, small or medium in size, is conical-pyramidal in shape and tends to be loose, sometimes with a wing; the berries are small to medium in size, ellipsoidal, with a slightly pruinose, yellow-green skin that turns golden as it ripens. The name evokes the grape’s floral aroma, reminiscent of Mediterranean broom flowers. The wine has a bright straw-yellow colour, sometimes with golden highlights, and offers aromas of white flowers, broom, citrus fruits and aromatic herbs, with possible mineral and briny undertones. On the palate, it is fresh, savoury and balanced, with medium body and supported by good acidity. Whilst it is enjoyable when young, it can develop more complex notes as it matures, including hints of hydrocarbons. On the Amalfi Coast, it contributes to local white blends, enhancing the identity of the coastal vineyard terraces.
