Girò Bianco is a rare Sardinian white grape variety, found in the Trexenta region, particularly in the Samatzai area, and also present in some old vineyards in Romangia, where it is known as Zirone bianco. Genetic analysis traces it back to a cross between Pansale, also known as Monica bianca, and Girò; it is a spontaneously occurring variety, still considered a unique part of the region’s viticultural heritage. From an ampelographic perspective, it features a wedge-shaped mature leaf, generally trilobed, with medium-sized lobes, an overlapping petiole sinus and an underside that is almost hairless. The berry is described as spheroidal, whilst the bunch exhibits moderate variability, consistent with the material recovered from the various growing areas. Its cultivation is documented primarily in southern Sardinia, between Trexenta and Campidano, with a distinct presence in the Romangia area around Sassari. Initial winemaking trials, carried out in Ussana, have produced balanced, fresh and elegant base wines, which are also suitable for sparkling wine production. The profile is delicate and harmonious, with a light structure and a pleasant smoothness; it is best suited to young, fragrant white wines, to be enjoyed for their freshness and as wines to be drunk young.
