Groppello di Mocasina is a native black grape variety from the western shore of Lake Garda, associated with the hamlet of Mocasina in Calvagese della Riviera, in the province of Brescia. Its presence has been documented since at least the 18th century, and the name ‘Groppello’ refers to the compact shape of the bunch, which resembles a knot. Belonging to the Groppello family, it is distinguished by a marked territorial identity and a particular aptitude for enhancing the quality of Garda wines.
The leaf is medium-sized, generally pentagonal and five-lobed, with a wavy margin, dark green in colour and a characteristic downy texture on the underside. The bunch is small to medium in size, cylindrical, either simple or with a short wing, compact and with a short stalk. The berries, which are rounded and of medium size, have a firm, pruinose, blue-black skin, whilst the flesh is juicy and colourless.
Cultivation is concentrated mainly in the Valtènesi and the hilltop municipalities of the province of Brescia, on morainic soils and in a mild, breezy, sub-Mediterranean climate. The wine has a brilliant ruby colour, sometimes with violet hues, and aromas of cherry, small red berries, and delicate floral and spicy notes. On the palate, it is fresh, smooth, harmonious and well-balanced, with fine tannins and an elegant texture. It is used both as a single variety and in blends, helping to intensify the aroma and enhance the wine’s roundness; it also produces interesting results in rosé wines.
