Groppello di Revò is an ancient indigenous grape variety from the Val di Non in Trentino, documented as far back as the 16th century and historically linked to the so-called ‘Terza Sponda’, on the hills sloping down towards Lake Santa Giustina. The name derives from the dialect term ‘grop’, meaning ‘knot’, in reference to the compact shape of the bunch. Genetic analyses have confirmed its distinct identity compared with other Groppello varieties in northern Italy.
The vine is vigorous, ripens late and adapts well to sunny mountain slopes. The leaves are medium-sized, generally pentagonal, trilobed or pentalobed, turning a reddish colour in autumn. The bunch, small to medium in size, cylindrical or cylindrical-conical, is particularly compact and sometimes has a small wing; the berries are medium-sized, rounded, with a thick, pruinose skin and an intense blue-black colour.
The wine is characterised by a brilliant ruby-red colour, often enlivened by violet hues, and by an aromatic profile that combines red fruits, undergrowth, alpine herbs and a distinctive peppery spiciness, linked to the presence of rotundone. On the palate, it offers marked freshness, pronounced tannins, good structure and a balanced finish. Ageing enhances its aromatic development and complexity, underpinned by its acidity. Often trained using the Guyot system on slopes that are difficult to mechanise, it represents one of the most authentic expressions of Trentino’s ‘heroic’ viticulture.
