Groppello Gentile is a native black grape variety associated primarily with the Valtènesi and the Brescia side of Lake Garda, where it is the most widespread biotype within the Groppello family. Its history is deeply intertwined with the wine-growing tradition of the Garda region; the name probably derives from ‘groppo’, a dialect term referring to the compact shape of the bunch. It is also found in some areas of the Veneto region and in a small area of the Val di Non, in Trentino.
From an ampelographic perspective, it has medium-sized leaves, generally pentagonal, trilobed or pentalobed, with serrated margins. The bunch is medium-sized, cylindrical or cylindrical-conical, often winged and fairly compact. The berries, of medium size and spherical shape, have a pruinose skin—thin yet firm, blue-violet in colour—and juicy flesh with a neutral flavour.
The wine produced from Groppello Gentile is characterised by a brilliant ruby-red colour, sometimes with delicate cherry-red highlights, and an aromatic profile centred on cherry, raspberry, small red berries and floral nuances, with spicy notes that become more pronounced during ageing. On the palate, it is fresh, lively and harmonious, supported by fine tannins and a balanced structure. It expresses its fragrance best when young, but can develop greater complexity and spicy notes with a few years’ ageing. It is also one of the key grape varieties used in the red and rosé wines of the Valtènesi.
