Lambrusco Grasparossa is a native grape variety from Emilia belonging to the historic Lambrusco family, traditionally associated with the hills and the upper plains of Modena, with Castelvetro as its heartland. The name refers to the characteristic reddish colour that the stalk takes on as the grapes approach ripeness, a distinctive feature that is particularly evident in autumn. The leaf is medium-sized, rounded or pentagonal, often three-lobed, with a dark green margin; the bunch, medium in size, pyramidal and winged, is generally loose or semi-loose. The berries are medium-sized, sub-oval or spherical, blue-black in colour, covered in a generous bloom, with a thick, firm skin and juicy flesh, offering a simple and pleasantly tart flavour. It is mainly grown in the province of Modena, from the hills of Castelvetro to the areas around Maranello, Sassuolo, Vignola and neighbouring municipalities, extending also into some hilly areas of the Reggio Emilia region. The wine has an intense ruby-red colour, often enlivened by violet hues, and vinous, fragrant aromas of fresh grapes, blackberries, black cherries, violets and young almonds. On the palate, it combines lively freshness, clearly perceptible tannins and a more pronounced structure than other Lambruscos. The effervescence enhances its dynamism and appeal; it is primarily intended to be enjoyed young, whilst allowing for interesting development in the more structured versions and those with carefully managed secondary fermentation.
