Magliocco Canino is a native black grape variety from Calabria, belonging to the historic Magliocchi family and distinct from Magliocco Dolce, with which it was frequently confused in the past. It is found mainly in northern and inland Calabria, particularly in the Cosenza area, with further pockets of cultivation in the provinces of Catanzaro and Vibo Valentia. The leaf is large, orbicular and generally five-lobed; the bunch, of medium size, is conical in shape, often winged, with varying degrees of compactness. The berry is small to medium in size, ellipsoidal, characterised by a thick, firm and pruinose skin, of an intense blue-violet colour. The grapes produce wines of a deep ruby red colour, sometimes intense, with pleasant and complex aromas, in which notes of dark fruit and dried fruit stand out, accompanied by spicy nuances in the more mature wines. On the palate, it displays good structure, balance, smoothness and an elegant tannic texture, underpinned by a distinct alcohol content. Its phenolic ripeness and rich colour make it well-suited to the production of red wines that are also suitable for ageing, capable of developing greater complexity over time. The main point of oenological interest lies precisely in its varietal identity, which is now being highlighted through ampelographic studies and modern interpretations that emphasise its terroir-driven character.
