Magliocco Dolce is an ancient black grape variety from Calabria, probably linked to the viticultural tradition of Greek origin and historically documented since at least the late 16th century. Belonging to the Magliocchi family, it is also known locally as Arvino, Lacrima Nera, Guarnaccia Nera and Mantonico Nero, names that reflect the richness of Calabrian wine-growing culture. The leaf is large, orbicular and generally five-lobed; the bunch, medium or small to medium in size, elongated and conical in shape, often has a compact structure and a short stalk. The berry is medium-sized, ellipsoidal, with a thick skin that is heavily pruinose and an intense blue-black colour. The variety is widespread mainly in Calabria, particularly in the provinces of Cosenza and Catanzaro, but is also found in other parts of the region and in some areas of Basilicata. It thrives in hot, dry conditions and ripens late. The wines produced display an intense ruby-red colour, sometimes with violet hues, and aromas of cherry, blackberry, plum and ripe fruit, accompanied by floral, spicy and balsamic notes. On the palate, they are full-bodied, smooth and harmonious, supported by a balanced tannic structure, with good alcohol content and persistent depth. The high polyphenol content promotes ageing and significant longevity, particularly in single-varietal wines.
