Maturano is an ancient white grape variety native to the Val di Comino, in the Frosinone area, where it represents one of the most interesting expressions of Lazio’s winemaking tradition. Long confined to local areas, it has undergone a significant process of recovery and promotion, which has led to its rediscovery and inclusion amongst the recognised varieties for wine grape production.
From an ampelographic point of view, it produces a medium-sized bunch, generally conical, compact and sometimes winged. The berries are round, rather large, with a firm skin, rich in bloom and an intense yellow colour when ripe. The leaf is broad, with a lobe shape varying from trilobed to pentalobed, a characteristic that may differ depending on the biotypes present.
Its cultivation is mainly concentrated in the province of Frosinone and the Ciociaria region, with presence also recorded within the main geographical indications of Lazio. The resulting wine is characterised by a straw-yellow colour with golden highlights and a broad aromatic profile, in which notes of pineapple, papaya, peach, banana and yellow apple emerge, accompanied by herbaceous and mineral nuances. On the palate, it offers good structure, freshness and a pleasant length. Its acidity and mineral character support its development in the bottle, particularly in the richer versions aged on the lees.
