La Merlina is the name by which Teroldego has historically been known in Valtellina, particularly in the Berbenno area, where its presence has been documented since at least the 17th century. Its origins are probably in Trentino: the grape variety is thought to have reached Lombardy via the ancient trade routes between Trentino and Valtellina, developing over time its own distinctive characteristics linked to the unique Alpine environment. The vine is vigorous and has large leaves, generally pentagonal and three-lobed. The bunch is medium to large, elongated, pyramidal and often has one or two wings, with varying degrees of compactness; within the Valtellina population, biotypes with smaller bunches are also recorded. The berry is medium-sized, spherical or sub-spherical, with a thick, firm skin that is heavily pruinose and an intense blue-black colour, rich in colouring pigments. Cultivation is now mainly confined to the terraced vineyards of Valtellina, whilst the reference vineyard finds its historical expression in the Piana Rotaliana in Trentino. The wine is a deep ruby red, sometimes with violet hues, with a vinous and fruity profile, featuring notes of cherry, raspberry and wild berries, accompanied by floral nuances. On the palate, it displays good structure, freshness, balanced tannins and remarkable colour intensity – qualities that give it excellent potential for ageing and cellaring.
