La Nera dei Baisi is an ancient red grape variety from the Vallagarina region, rediscovered in the Baisi district of Terragnolo, where an old vine had survived, growing against the wall of a rural dwelling. The revival, which began in the early 2000s through conservation efforts and small-scale winemaking, has brought renewed attention to a viticultural heritage linked to the Leno and Adige valleys. In the vineyard, it is characterised by small, compact bunches that ripen late, with dark-skinned, richly coloured berries; the vigorous foliage is characteristic of a hardy variety well-suited to the hilly and valley environments of southern Trentino. Today, its cultivation is mainly associated with the Vallagarina and Valdadige regions, where it thrives on alluvial soils and is trained using traditional methods. The wine has a vivid and intense ruby-red colour, sometimes enhanced by violet hues. The aromatic profile is fresh and fragrant, dominated by cherry, strawberry, raspberry and small red berries, with possible floral and spicy nuances following ageing. On the palate, it is light, savoury and pleasantly smooth, with moderate, silky tannins, good freshness and a balanced structure. Partial ageing in wood enhances its depth and persistence, whilst bottle ageing promotes harmonious development, with average longevity and a distinctly pleasant drinking experience.
