Pampanaro is an ancient white grape variety from southern Lazio, which has been cultivated for many centuries in the lower Frusinate area. Its origins remain unclear, but nineteenth-century ampelographic records document its presence amongst the whitish or yellowish grapes of the province of Terra di Lavoro, particularly in Alvito, Arce, Arpino, Atina, Picinisco and Pontecorvo. Recent genetic studies have also linked it to the ‘Bello dei Castelli Romani’ biotype, whilst the revival promoted by regional research has led to its rediscovery and inclusion in the National Register of Wine Grape Varieties.
The leaf is medium-sized, pentagonal and generally five-lobed, with a smooth upper surface and a V-shaped petiole sinus. The bunch, of medium size, is conical in shape, often with one or more wings, and is moderately compact. The berry is medium-sized, round or slightly elliptical, with a firm, pruinose skin of a yellow-green colour.
Its historical growing area coincides mainly with the Liri Valley, the Val di Comino and the hills of the province of Frosinone, with documented occurrences also in the Castelli Romani. The wine is characterised by an intense straw-yellow colour with greenish highlights, floral aromas of chamomile and hints of white fruit, such as apple. On the palate, it offers good structure, marked freshness and a balanced flavour profile; its acidity provides a solid foundation for positive development in the bottle.
