Premetta, also known as Prié rouge or Primetta, is an ancient indigenous variety from the Aosta Valley. The name Primetta, first documented as far back as the nineteenth century, refers to the grape’s relatively early ripening; a centuries-old vine preserved in Aymavilles bears witness to the variety’s deep-rooted history in the region. It is found mainly in the central valley, between Aosta and Avise, with significant numbers in the traditional vineyards of Aymavilles and the surrounding municipalities.
From an ampelographic point of view, it has medium-to-large, pentagonal leaves that are either entire or trilobed. The bunch is long, pyramidal, generally compact and has a wing; the berry, medium or medium-large in size, is ovoid in shape, with a thin, very pruinose skin of a pinkish-purple colour, and pale, delicately pinkish flesh.
When vinified, it produces a wine with a characteristic cherry-pink colour, sometimes enriched with orange hues. The aromatic profile is refined and enveloping, with floral and fruity notes; on the palate, it displays freshness, moderate alcohol content, good body and a pronounced tannic structure. Its lively acidity also makes Premetta an interesting choice for the production of sparkling rosés, whilst in still versions, a brief ageing period helps to harmonise the tannins and promote a balanced development over time.
