Refosco di Faedis, also known as Refosco nostrano, is an ancient indigenous grape variety from Friuli, which has been cultivated for centuries in the eastern hills of the province of Udine. Its history is linked above all to the areas of Faedis, Attimis, Nimis, Povoletto and Torreano, where it has found its ideal growing environment and where, even today, it remains one of the most distinctive expressions of local viticulture. The vine is characterised by its vigorous growth, cinnamon-coloured shoots and robust leaves, which are generally three-lobed, with a smooth upper surface and a hairless underside, featuring prominent veins. The bunch is large, conical or pyramidal in shape, often winged and elongated; the berries, spherical or slightly oval, are of medium size, closely packed, with a firm skin, heavily pruinose and bluish-black in colour. The wine has an intense red colour, often with vivid violet hues, which may tend towards garnet as it matures. On the nose, it offers vinous and fruity aromas, reminiscent of small wild berries, with possible spicy and herbaceous notes. On the palate, it is fresh, savoury, structured and moderately tannic, with a balanced texture and a pleasant length. When carefully vinified, it can express both youthful immediacy and a significant capacity for ageing. An important point of interest is its genetic and ampelographic distinction from the better-known Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, despite both belonging to the Refosco family.
