Ribolla Gialla is one of the iconic grape varieties of Friuli Venezia Giulia, historically linked to the hills of Gorizia, the Collio and the Colli Orientali del Friuli. Its presence has been documented since the Middle Ages and extends beyond the region’s borders, where it is known as Rebula, particularly in the Slovenian Brda hills. From an ampelographic point of view, it has medium-sized leaves, generally almost entire or three-lobed, with a surface that is often slightly blistered; the bunch is small to medium in size, cylindrical or cylindrical-conical, sometimes winged and moderately compact. The berry, of medium size and spheroidal or slightly flattened in shape, has a yellow-green, pruinose and rather delicate skin. The resulting wine is characterised by a straw-yellow colour, which can develop into golden and amber hues in macerated versions. On the nose, it offers delicate aromas of white flowers, citrus, apple, pear and, at times, mineral and balsamic notes. On the palate, it displays marked freshness, balance, savouriness and a structure ranging from light to medium-full-bodied, capable of developing complexity with ageing. In addition to still wines, Ribolla Gialla lends itself to the production of sparkling wines and macerated styles, in which the skins enhance the body, depth and longevity.
