Schiava Gentile is a black grape variety belonging to the Schiava family, historically linked to the central-eastern Alpine region and, in particular, to South Tyrol. Its origins can be traced back to the Slavic and Tyrolean winemaking traditions, whilst genetic studies have highlighted its kinship with Pinot Noir and its role in the genealogy of grape varieties such as Lagrein. Also known as Schiava Piccola or Kleinvernatsch, it has medium-to-large leaves with a rounded or pentagonal margin, generally three-lobed, sometimes almost entire, and with a slightly blistered surface. The bunch is medium-sized, pyramidal, often winged and rather loose; the berries, which are small to medium in size, have a thin, tender skin rich in bloom, and are an intense blue-violet colour. Cultivation is concentrated mainly in South Tyrol and Trentino, with traditional presence also in some areas of Veneto and Lombardy. The wine is characterised by a bright ruby colour, sometimes enhanced by violet hues, and a fragrant aromatic profile dominated by cherry, small red berries, raspberry, violet and delicate hints of almond. On the palate, it is fresh, harmonious and generally light-bodied, with fine tannins and a pleasant smoothness. It expresses its immediacy best in its early years, although it can acquire greater complexity with a short period of ageing.
