Scimiscià is an ancient white grape variety from Liguria, historically associated with the Graveglia Valley, the Fontanabuona Valley and the hills of the Chiavari hinterland, with documented occurrences also in the Cinque Terre. The first recorded reference to the variety dates back to the early 19th century, when it was known as ‘Cimixiaro’. Its identity has sometimes been linked to that of ancient Tuscan grapes of the same name, an interesting historical question that remains at the centre of ampelographic studies. The leaf is medium to large, pentagonal and generally five-lobed, though sometimes three-lobed, with veins tinged with red, a moderately blistered surface and a tomentose underside. The bunch is medium to large, long, conical or cylindrical, winged and ranging from loose to moderately compact; the berry is spheroidal or ellipsoidal, with a yellow-green skin, speckled with rust-coloured patches and tending towards golden in sunnier exposures. Grown mainly in eastern Liguria, it is one of the varieties permitted under the Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino appellation. The resulting wine is straw-yellow in colour, sometimes golden, with floral aromas of rose and fruity notes of peach and citrus. On the palate, it combines good alcohol content, freshness, savouriness and body, with a pleasant slightly bitter finish. Its structure and acidity encourage positive development in the bottle, whilst also allowing its aromatic fragrance to shine through even when young.
