Susumaniello is an ancient black grape variety from Apulia, deeply rooted in the Brindisi area and the Salento region. Its origins are traditionally traced back to the eastern Adriatic coast – probably Dalmatia – from where it is thought to have reached the Apulian coast in ancient times; Over time, it has become an integral part of local viticulture, playing a particularly important role in the areas between Brindisi, Cellino San Marco, Ostuni, Mesagne and parts of the provinces of Lecce and Bari. The name, which derives from dialectal forms linked to the word ‘somarello’ (little donkey), refers to the high yield of the young vines, which are capable of producing numerous, well-distributed bunches.
From an ampelographic point of view, it has medium-to-large leaves, generally pentagonal and five-lobed, with a slightly blistered surface. The bunch is medium or medium-large in size, pyramidal in shape, often winged and fairly compact; the berries, which are spherical, have a blue-black skin that is very pruinose and rich in colouring pigments, with soft flesh and a neutral flavour.
The wine is characterised by an intense ruby-red colour, sometimes with violet hues, and aromas of ripe black and red fruits, with spicy, herbaceous and balsamic notes. On the palate, it offers freshness, good structure, noticeable tannins and a pleasant intensity – characteristics that favour its development in the bottle. In addition to reds, Susumaniello also produces interesting results when vinified as a rosé or used in the production of sparkling wine.
