Trebbiano Abruzzese is a white grape variety deeply rooted in the winemaking tradition of Abruzzo; it belongs to the large Trebbiano family and is distinct from Trebbiano Toscano. Listed in the National Register of Vine Varieties in 1994, it retains a recognisable territorial identity and is one of the region’s historic grape varieties. The leaf is medium-sized, with three or five lobes; the bunch, medium or medium-large, is generally conical or cylindrical-conical, sometimes winged and semi-loose. The berry is medium-large, round, with a thick, firm skin, greenish-yellow in colour and often characterised by slight speckling. It is mainly grown in the hilly areas of Abruzzo, from the provinces of Teramo and Pescara as far as Chieti and L’Aquila, where the breezy climate and significant daily temperature variations promote balance and finesse. The wine has a bright straw-yellow colour, sometimes with greenish highlights, and delicate aromas of white flowers, apple, citrus, peach and chamomile, accompanied by mineral undertones. On the palate, it is dry, fresh and harmonious, with good suppleness, balanced structure and a slightly almondy finish. In its more ambitious expressions, the freshness supports an interesting development towards notes of almond, honey, hay and delicate spices. An interesting oenological feature is its versatility: it can be expressed in fragrant, immediate styles, but also through ageing on fine lees or in wood.
