Trebbiano Spoletino is a white grape variety native to southern Umbria, historically linked to the Spoleto Valley and documented under this name since at least the 19th century. Its distant origins are not entirely clear, but ampelographic research and the presence of old vines confirm its deep connection with the Spoleto area. It is a vigorous variety, with late budbreak and ripening, suited to both the plains and the hills. The leaf is medium-sized, generally pentagonal and three- or five-lobed, with prominent veins; the bunch is medium-sized, cylindrical-conical and fairly compact, whilst the berry, spheroidal and greenish-yellow in colour, has a firm skin, bloom and juicy flesh. It is mainly grown in the province of Perugia, in the areas of Spoleto, Trevi, Montefalco, Campello sul Clitunno, Castel Ritaldi and Foligno, the heart of the Spoleto DOC. The wine displays hues ranging from straw yellow to golden, characteristic aromas reminiscent of yellow flowers, citrus fruits and ripe fruit, and a dry, fresh, savoury, structured and persistent palate. Its natural acidity promotes good ageing potential in the bottle, particularly in the richer styles and in wines that have undergone ageing. Its oenological versatility is noteworthy: it can produce still wines, sparkling wines and passito wines, as well as wines macerated on the skins or aged in wood.
