Verdiso is a white grape variety native to the Treviso hills, whose presence in the Conegliano area has been documented since at least the 18th century. Historically linked to the territories of Conegliano, Valdobbiadene, Vittorio Veneto, Fregona, Combai and Miane, it thrives in the hilly and foothill areas of the Veneto region, where the daily temperature variations help to maintain a pronounced acidity. The leaf is of medium size, generally pentagonal in shape, almost entire or three-lobed, with a thin, slightly blistered margin. The bunch, of medium size, has a cylindrical-pyramidal shape and is often loose or semi-compact in structure. The berries are medium to large, ellipsoidal, with a pruinose, yellowish-green skin and juicy flesh, with a simple and delicate flavour. The wine made from Verdiso is characterised by a straw-yellow colour with greenish highlights, and fresh aromas of green apple, citrus, white flowers and light herbaceous notes. On the palate, it is light, savoury and subtly structured, underpinned by a lively acidity that enhances its fragrance and its suitability for sparkling wine production. It is generally best enjoyed young, whilst versions made from dried grapes can develop greater complexity and ageing potential. A notable oenological curiosity is its use in Conegliano Valdobbiadene and Torchiato di Fregona, where it contributes freshness and a lively flavour profile to the wine’s balance.
