Verduzzo Friulano is a white grape variety deeply rooted in the winemaking history of Friuli, where it has been documented since at least the 19th century and has established itself as one of the region’s iconic varieties. It is found mainly in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, particularly in the provinces of Udine, Gorizia and Pordenone, and is also grown in the neighbouring areas of Veneto. The leaf is medium-sized, rounded, generally almost entire or three-lobed, with slightly pronounced lobes and a smooth or slightly hairy underside. The bunch is small or medium-sized, truncated-pyramidal in shape, winged and semi-compact; the berry, which is ellipsoidal in shape, has a thick, firm and pruinose skin, greenish-yellow in colour, which may develop golden hues as it ripens. The wines produced range in colour from intense straw yellow to golden, and even amber in the more mature or sweet versions. The aromatic profile is distinctive and intense, with fruity, floral and sometimes honeyed notes; on the palate, it displays good structure, a balance between smoothness and freshness, and a light, elegant tannic texture. It can produce dry, semi-sweet or sweet wines, capable of developing interesting evolving notes and good ageing potential, particularly in late-harvest versions. An interesting point concerns its distinction from Verduzzo Trevigiano, a variety that differs in origin and ampelographic characteristics.
