Biava
Biava is a Lombardy-based producer with links to Scanzorosciate, in the Bergamo area, and in particular to the slopes of Monte Bastia, a region historically associated with Moscato di Scanzo DOCG. The vineyards are situated on the upper slopes of the hill, in a setting with a strong sense of place, where sun exposure, a mild climate and marl-limestone soils – known locally as ‘Sass de Luna’ – contribute to the ripening of grapes with an intense and distinctive aromatic profile. The winery interprets this heritage through viticulture that respects the natural rhythm of the seasons and careful management of the raw materials, with a central role played by Moscato di Scanzo, the black-berried grape variety at the heart of the appellation of the same name. The production of passito wines involves the natural drying of the grapes on racks, a practice that concentrates sugars, aromas and structure prior to vinification. In the cellar, ageing may take place in stainless steel, wood and concrete vessels – vessels chosen to guide the wines’ evolution whilst maintaining control and precision. Biava’s style is based on a balance between the Scanzo tradition and a clear interpretation of the terroir: wines with a distinct regional character, capable of expressing the aromatic richness of Moscato di Scanzo alongside the mineral finesse and depth imparted by the Bergamo hills.
