Castello di Monsanto
Castello di Monsanto is a leading name in Tuscan Chianti Classico, situated in the central-western part of the appellation, in the municipality of San Donato in Poggio, between Florence and Siena. Its identity stems from a hilly landscape where the vineyards are surrounded by woods and Mediterranean scrub, with a natural balance that contributes to the aromatic and structural character of the grapes. The breezy, elevated terrain and the influence of sea breezes promote consistent ripening, which is particularly important for Sangiovese, the central grape variety in the estate’s winemaking, alongside traditional varieties such as Canaiolo and Colorino.
The soil plays a decisive role: the presence of galestro, a schistose rock typical of certain areas of Chianti Classico, imparts depth, tension and a distinctive mineral character to the wines. Monsanto is also characterised by a very precise understanding of the vineyard, as evidenced by the historic role of Il Poggio, cited by the appellation’s sources as the first single-vineyard Chianti Classico. This focus on the provenance of the raw material results in wines with a distinct profile, capable of combining acidic freshness, verticality and substance.
In the winery, the approach prioritises meticulous winemaking techniques that respect the character of the grapes, with processes designed to preserve the terroir’s identity, the fruit’s vitality and stylistic consistency. The result is a robust and distinctive expression of Chianti Classico, based on Sangiovese, galestro and a coherent vision of the terroir.
