Fay
Fay is a winery in Valtellina, Lombardy, founded in 1973 and deeply rooted in San Giacomo di Teglio and the Valgella sub-zone of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG appellation. Its identity is rooted in mountain viticulture and in the careful assessment of individual vineyards, which are regarded not as indistinct plots but as places capable of expressing differences in soil, altitude and aspect. The flagship grape variety is Nebbiolo, known locally as Chiavennasca, grown on the alpine terraces that characterise the Valtellina wine-growing landscape.
The natural environment is an essential part of the style: steep slopes, dry stone walls, significant elevation changes and granitic soils – predominantly sandy and silty, with no limestone or clay – all contribute to wines with a refined, vertical and distinctive profile. Valgella, in the municipality of Teglio, represents the heart of the producer’s expression, with a focus on bringing out the personality of the various vineyards through clear, terroir-driven interpretations.
The winemaking approach prioritises making the most of the raw material and ensuring consistency between the wine’s place of origin and its style. The result is a measured and precise interpretation of Valtellina, in which Nebbiolo from the Alps finds elegant, fresh and mineral expressions, capable of conveying the natural tension of the mountains and the tradition of terraced viticulture in the province of Sondrio.
