Giovanna Madonia
Giovanna Madonia is a winery based in Bertinoro, in the heart of Romagna, nestled on the slopes of Montemaggio hill and set amidst a landscape with a long history of vine-growing. Its identity stems from a direct connection with the grape varieties that best represent this part of Emilia-Romagna, in particular Sangiovese and Albana, expressed through the Romagna Sangiovese DOC and Romagna Albana DOCG designations.
Bertinoro’s soil and climate are among its most distinctive features. The vineyards are situated on ‘spungone’, a limestone formation typical of the area, which has a marked influence on the character of the wines: minerality, savouriness and a natural expressive tension become recognisable traits, underpinned by a balance between fruit ripeness and freshness. The hillside location also favours a style of viticulture that focuses on the quality of the raw material and the terroir-driven character of the grapes.
The winemaking style favours wines with a distinct character, deeply rooted in the Romagna region, in which the vigour of Sangiovese and the personality of Albana come to the fore without any artificiality. The result is a coherent expression of Bertinoro: reds that combine structure, elegance and savoury vigour, and whites that highlight the texture of Albana and its natural complexity. The winery thus represents a precise expression of Romagna’s wine-growing heritage, rooted in the character of the soils, the distinctiveness of the grape varieties and a winemaking philosophy focused on territorial authenticity.
