Producers/ La Fontuccia
La Fontuccia
La Fontuccia is a Tuscan producer with close ties to the island of Giglio, in the most coastal part of the Maremma. Its identity stems from its focus on the Ansonica grape variety, a historic variety of the Maremma coast and the archipelago, grown here as a single variety to capture the island’s character. The vineyards are situated on small terraces overlooking the sea, amongst dry stone walls and granite rocks, in a bright, breezy environment shaped by the constant presence of the Mediterranean. Cultivation requires careful, manual work, with difficult access and steep slopes that place this estate firmly within the tradition of Giglio’s ‘heroic’ viticulture.
La Fontuccia’s work forms part of the revival of an island tradition that has shaped the landscape for centuries with small vineyards, exposed to the sun and sea air. The dry climate, the granite-based soils and the maritime influence combine to produce white wines with a strong sense of place, in which Mediterranean ripeness, savoury tension and mineral notes become distinctive features. The winemaking approach is geared towards preserving the distinctive character of Ansonica del Giglio, avoiding artificial interventions and allowing the relationship between the grapes, light, wind and sea to shine through. The result is a clear, island-specific expression, consistent with a rare part of the Tuscan coast and with an agricultural culture founded on care, patience and respect for the landscape.
