Santa Caterina
Santa Caterina is a Ligurian wine producer based in Sarzana, in the far east of the region, in a landscape bordering Tuscany that has historically been linked to the Lunigiana and the wine-growing area of the Colli di Luni. The estate’s identity stems from a terraced hillside and plots facing the sea, where the vines grow alongside woods and olive groves in an environment characterised by alluvial soils, red clay soils and, in some areas closer to the coast, gravelly and pebbly components. In this setting, Vermentino plays a central role, alongside varieties that form part of the local agricultural heritage and grapes that reflect Eastern Liguria with their own distinctive, regional character.
The production approach prioritises a method that respects the raw material and the natural transformation of the grapes. Spontaneous fermentation, the absence of oenological additives during vinification, the maceration of white grapes, and the use of stainless steel and stoneware vats define a minimalist philosophy, aimed at preserving the vitality of the vintage and the character of the vineyard. The wines express a Mediterranean, hillside character, with profiles that combine freshness, body, salty notes and a minerality linked to the proximity of the sea and the nature of the soils. Santa Caterina thus represents a distinctive voice of eastern Liguria, capable of interpreting the territory through natural wines that are dry in style and deeply connected to their place of origin.
