Sergio Mottura
Sergio Mottura is a leading figure in northern Lazio, based in Civitella d’Agliano, in the Tuscia region of Viterbo, an area that forms a natural and cultural border between Lazio and Umbria. The vineyards are nestled amongst clay-rich hills, badlands and the Tiber valley, shaped geologically by the volcanic complex of the Monti Vulsini and Lake Bolsena. This setting gives the wines a distinctive terroir character, characterised by mineral tension, structure and aromatic depth.
The winery’s identity is closely linked to white wines, and in particular to Grechetto, which is regarded as a variety capable of combining character, intensity of flavour and ageing potential. Alongside the historic role of Orvieto, the work on Civitella d’Agliano IGT has helped to define a distinct and precise expression of the grape variety, underpinned by careful grape selection and a close understanding of the different vineyards.
The approach to viticulture is centred on organic farming – with certification obtained in the 1990s – and on practices aimed at maintaining the balance of the ecosystem: natural grass cover, the avoidance of chemical fertilisers, natural solutions for vine protection, and a focus on reducing environmental impact. In the winery, a measured technical approach prevails, with winemaking methods designed to preserve the integrity of the raw material and its depth of expression. The use of stainless steel, oak in certain wines, and ageing on fine lees all contribute to a style of white wine that is full-bodied yet not static, fresh, enveloping and true to the character of the Tuscia region.
