Torraccia del Piantavigna

Torraccia del Piantavigna is a producer from Upper Piedmont based in Ghemme, in an area where Nebbiolo finds one of its most distinctive expressions. Its identity stems from the interplay between two historic and neighbouring appellations, Ghemme DOCG and Gattinara DOCG, separated by the River Sesia and united by the presence of Monte Rosa, which influences the climate and daily temperature variations. In the vineyards of Ghemme, soils of fluvial and alluvial origin predominate, with a clay component and natural acidity; in Gattinara, by contrast, the soil is volcanic, stony, porous and rich in minerals, imparting energy and tension to the wines.

The work in the vineyard and in the winery is geared towards interpreting these differences without standardising them. Nebbiolo is the main grape variety, complemented – where tradition dictates – by local varieties such as Vespolina, with an approach that prioritises slow ripening, careful selection of the raw material and winemaking methods that focus on achieving a balance between structure, aromas and freshness. Production practices emphasise measured extraction, patient ageing and the gradual development of the wine’s terroir-driven character.

The style of Torraccia del Piantavigna’s wines reflects the character of Upper Piedmont: pronounced yet refined tannins, lively acidity, a savoury texture and a delicate aromatic profile. The result is a less immediate and more vertical expression of Nebbiolo, capable of combining elegance, mineral depth and a distinct geographical character.
