The Alto Vulture region is one of the most distinctive expressions of Lucanian viticulture, shaped by the ancient Vulture volcanic range and a landscape of high hills, breezy slopes and dark soils of lava and pyroclastic origin. Here, the vines take root in soils rich in tuff, ash, volcanic sand and clay, which promote water balance and slow ripening, imparting a distinctive mineral character to the wines.
The climate combines continental characteristics, marked daily temperature variations and good ventilation: invaluable conditions for preserving aromatic freshness, structure and phenolic complexity. The flagship grape variety is Aglianico, historically linked to these slopes, where it produces deep, tannic and long-lived reds, often carefully aged in wood and in the bottle to harmonise power, elegance and spicy notes. Alongside the more structured expressions, the region also yields more fragrant and immediate wines, always underpinned by a savoury profile and a distinct character.
The winemaking tradition of Alto Vulture thrives on the interplay between ancient farming practices, cave-dug cellars or cool ageing environments, and a contemporary approach to viticulture that focuses on bringing out the best in individual plots.
