The Basso Vulture region occupies the gentlest and most open part of the slopes of Mount Vulture, where the volcanic terrain slopes down towards the hills and plains of north-eastern Basilicata. The vineyard landscape alternates between terraces, breezy slopes and wide open spaces, which promote good exposure and the even ripening of the grapes. The climate retains continental characteristics, with cold winters, bright and dry summers, rainfall concentrated mainly in the autumn months, and significant temperature variations between day and night.
The soils are the result of the volcano’s long history of eruptions: pyroclastic materials, ash, tuff and lapilli combine, in the lower-lying areas, with clayey, sandy and alluvial components. This diversity contributes to the wines’ expressive richness and their distinctive mineral character.
Aglianico del Vulture is the region’s signature grape variety, capable of producing intense, structured and long-lived reds, underpinned by acidity, a tannic structure and aromas of dark fruits, spices and balsamic notes. Alongside the reds, there is also a range of rosés, younger wines and white or aromatic wines made from Moscato, Malvasia and other grape varieties permitted in regional production. Viticulture emphasises moderate pruning, low-trellis training systems and late harvests; in the cellar, careful maceration and ageing in stainless steel, concrete or wood accompany the wine’s development.
