Bagnara Calabra boasts one of the most picturesque wine-growing landscapes on the Costa Viola, where the slopes of the lower Aspromonte descend steeply towards the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Messina. The vineyards stretch across steep slopes, often laid out in terraces supported by traditional ‘armacìe’ – the dry-stone walls that shape the mountain’s silhouette and make it possible to cultivate vines in the narrow space between the sea and the hills. The geological setting belongs to the Calabrian-Peloritan domain, featuring metamorphic and igneous rocks and ancient uplifted marine terraces – elements that contribute to the diversity of the soils and the distinct character of the grapes.
The proximity of the sea, the abundant sunlight and the breezes from the Strait create a Mediterranean environment conducive to ripening, maintaining balance and vitality in the wines. Alongside the varieties authorised by the Costa Viola IGT, local tradition places particular emphasis on Zibibbo and Calabrese Nero, alongside other black grape varieties found in the area. The designation includes white, red, rosé and novello wines, some of which specify the grape variety. Production practices adhere to traditional methods of vine training, pruning and canopy management, whilst the winemaking process brings out harmonious, structured reds; dry, distinctive whites; and fresh, pleasant rosés. The region’s wine-growing history is rooted in a long-standing Mediterranean culture, now preserved through the terraced landscape and the restoration of historic vineyards.
