San Marco Argentano is situated at the head of the Crati Valley, between the slopes of the Coastal Range and the hills overlooking the Pollino area. The wine-growing landscape alternates between hills, valleys and breezy slopes, with vineyards situated at various altitudes, where the Mediterranean influence combines with cooler conditions and marked daily temperature variations. This diversity favours gradual ripening, distinct aromas and well-defined flavours.
The soils vary in composition, featuring sandy and clayey substrates, sandstone outcrops and mineral components linked to the complex geological structure of the Crati Valley. Several historically recognised wine-growing districts are found within the area, including Spinetto and Pietrabianca, already renowned for the quality of their vineyards.
The grape variety profile centres primarily on Calabrian varieties such as Magliocco, Mantonico, Guarnaccia bianca, Guarnaccia nera, Greco and Pecorello. These yield intense, terroir-driven reds, fragrant rosés, fresh and savoury whites, as well as wines made from late harvest grapes, passito or skin-contact maceration. Production methods combine traditional systems such as the alberello and Guyot training systems, with spontaneous fermentation, vinification in stainless steel and ageing in large oak casks. The village’s agricultural heritage, which is also linked to the Abbey of Matina, now underpins a distinctive approach to viticulture focused on promoting local grape varieties.
