Furore is one of the sub-zones of the Costa d’Amalfi DOC and encompasses a vertical wine-growing landscape, shaped by the slopes of the Lattari Mountains and its view of the sea. The vineyards occupy well-exposed hillsides, often laid out in terraces supported by dry stone walls, where viticulture requires meticulous care and is carried out predominantly by hand. The altitude, sunlight, constant breeze and moderate maritime influence promote the gradual ripening of the grapes, preserving their freshness and aromatic definition.
The geological structure is dominated by limestone, with clayey components along the slopes and soils rich in mineral fragments – elements that contribute to the savouriness and depth of the wines. Traditional training systems include pergola and espalier, with pruning methods adapted to the slope and the layout of the terraces.
The ampelographic heritage reflects a strong local identity. Among the whites, Falanghina and Biancolella are joined by Pepella, Ripoli, Fenile and Ginestra, whilst among the reds and rosés, Piedirosso, Sciascinoso and Aglianico stand out. This yields bright, fragrant and savoury white wines, fresh and delicate rosés, and reds with good balance and structure, as well as the passito and sparkling wines permitted under the appellation. The winemaking tradition, documented as far back as the early Middle Ages, rounds off the character of a unique and highly distinctive terroir.
