Modigliana is one of the most distinctive sub-zones of Romagna Sangiovese, set amongst the rolling hills of the Faenza-Forlì Apennines. The area is characterised by woodland, often steep slopes and altitudes reaching around 500 metres, with a cooler and breezier climate than the hilly areas closer to the plain. The daily temperature variations encourage the grapes to ripen gradually and contribute to the wines’ aromatic complexity and structural tension.
The geology is characterised by predominantly sandy sedimentary soils, with calcareous marl and varying combinations along the three valleys carved out by the watercourses that flow into the Marzeno. This varied terrain produces distinct nuances, yet all share a pronounced mineral character and a natural elegance.
The main grape variety is Sangiovese, which, as stipulated for the sub-zone, must constitute the predominant percentage; here it expresses itself through aromas of red fruits, violets, aromatic herbs and earthy notes. The characteristic wines are dry, fragrant and lively reds, supported by acidity, a fine tannic structure and good ageing potential. The winemaking process emphasises the terroir: fermentation and ageing in wood are permitted, whilst the production regulations exclude enrichment. The winemaking tradition, linked to small hillside plots and careful management of the slopes, completes Modigliana’s distinctive identity.
