Rosazzo stretches across the southern hills of the Colli Orientali, between Manzano, San Giovanni al Natisone and a small part of Corno di Rosazzo, in a gently rolling landscape of ridges, terraces and gently sloping hillsides. The terroir is characterised by ponca, a flysch of Eocene origin formed by alternating layers of calcareous marl and sandstone, with a predominance of marl. These are loamy-silty-clay soils, moderately alkaline, crumbly and susceptible to erosion, requiring careful water management, terracing and contour farming.
The location, close to the sea and relatively sheltered by the surrounding hills, favours a mild, sunny and breezy climate, ensuring balanced ripening of the grapes and good preservation of their freshness. The region’s viticultural tradition focuses primarily on Friulano, Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Ribolla Gialla, which are vinified into white wines with a harmonious texture, a delicate and fragrant profile, underpinned by acidity and structure. In the vineyard, training systems such as Guyot, spurred cordon and double inverted cordon are widely used, aimed at controlling vigour and enhancing quality. Rosazzo’s identity is also inextricably linked to its abbey, which since the Middle Ages has safeguarded and promoted the culture of the vine, keeping alive a winemaking tradition documented over the centuries.
